The Embassy assisted AnimeKon in bringing Mami Okada and Victor Sgroi frin BangZoom! Entertainment to Barbados to lead workshops and work with local professionals in the industry.
Visiting Barbados as AnimeKon guests was such a great opportunity to realize that what we do in our studio in Burbank, CA affects people’s lives around the world. And also to know that love and passion for pop-culture – such as anime, comics, video games, etc, are equal even though we live in different countries.
One of our main focuses at AnimeKon was to help with the Voice Acting Workshop, along with the successful actress, Alison Sealy-Smith. As we, Bang Zoom! Entertainment, have been hosting numerous workshops and events at various major conventions, we were glad to be able to bring our experience to this workshop – which had never been done in Barbados!
Although we had discussed and prepared the materials for the workshop in advance, we began to worry how it would actually turn out. What if only a few people show up? What if nobody wants to come up and try voice acting in front of the audience? However once the workshop started, our worries disappeared completely. There were many people – many serious people – who want to know about voice acting and craft their skills. I was very impressed with everyone’s response.
Alison is such a powerful person – she had many great, yet honest, stories to tell. At the group audition segment, I was very glad to find out that there were many who wanted to participate. To get up in front of people and start performing takes some courage. It was great to know that many people were able to make the “first step.”
Inspired by our workshop, many people decided to continue to take steps toward their goal. This fact makes our visit absolutely worthwhile.
Our visit may have been short, but we hope to continue connecting with people in Barbados and around the world through websites and social media.
